We’ve all been there: there’s a new special someone in your life, and you want to impress them with your amazing knitting skills. Perhaps you’ve knitted them a stripy scarf before, maybe even a pair of socks (woohoo), but now you feel ready to tackle the big one, the one that really says ‘I love you’.
You’re knitting them THE PERFECT JUMPER.
Now, knitting folklore has it that knitting your loved one a jumper is actually the worst thing you can do for your relationship. Just like some believe that a broken mirror brings seven years of bad luck, it is said that gifting a lovingly hand-knitted jumper to your love will inevitably result in a break-up.
SO, SILLY SUPERSTITION OR REALITY?
Well, a bit of both really. But we prefer to say it's down to psychology as the idea of supernatural powers freaks us out by definition. As you know, knitting requires a significant amount of time, care and commitment. Surely not everyone deserves you to spend hours knitting a beautiful piece just for them! The process of knitting can thus turn out to be a good 'health check' for your relationship. Who knows, you might end up facing some revelations, perhaps you'll realize that the man isn't as 'all good' as you imagined and end up wrapping up your freshly knitted jumper for your Dad on next Christmas. Yes, knitting takes time. And during the hours you'll spend knitting, you'll relax, you'll dream AND you'll inevitably examine your feelings for the person you're working so hard for. And if you happen to question whether that person deserves a knitted jumper, he might not exactly be Mr Right.
On the other hand, (no we're not as miserable as it seems) the experience is also likely to reinforce your convictions and boost your relationship. So definitely give it a go !
